The Boston Phoenix has declared Township an official “Supergroup” with their “transcendent bout of ‘70’s stadium rock that sounds like The Who on steroids with an Afro-Latin twist.” Hard to believe that the 2007 WBCN Rock n’ Roll Rumble winners have only been in existence for barely over a year, but all nay-saying falls aside when the group steps on stage. Nominated for two 2007 Boston Music Awards (Outstanding New Act, Outstanding Rock Band), Township was formed in 2006 by Greg Beadle (CancerConspiracy), Marc Pinansky (Runner and the Thermodynamics), and John Sheeran (SPiTZZ). The band immediately self-released a hand-made, limited edition EP, of which the single “Gunnin Thru the Nite” quickly became a local radio smash, garnering frequent play not only on local spotlight shows, but on primetime commercial radio as well. A stunning 35mm video was crafted for the song by professional New York City producer/cinematographer/director wunderkinds Josh Litwhiler and Steve Maing. The EP was quickly re-pressed after selling out, and another cut, “The Major” found international release on the DVD “Ski Porn,” which put the band alongside Wolfmother, Kasabian, Rare Earth and The Jefferson Starship. This track was quickly adopted (with permission) by Pacific Sunwear on-line and was featured on the internationally released skateboard video for Globe Shoes, on which the Rolling Stones are also included.
Township’s stellar live reputation currently outweighs their recorded successes, earning the respect of all bands that have shared the stage with them – Incubus, BRMC, Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party, The Bravery, Extreme, The Click Five, Bobby Brown, The Fiery Furnaces, Hockey Night, The Ark, The Mooney Suzuki, Richard Lloyd, Bad Wizard, The Drive-By Truckers, Cetro-Matic, and Alice Cooper.
The Ladywood EP was released in March based on the myspace success of live favorite “Give It To It,” which was named WBCN’s Local Song Of the Year for 2007. Shows are now selling out, with 2 sets being demanded and Township playing for over 2 hours. The Northeast Performer gave them the cover for June 2007, with all local press outlets singing the band’s live and recorded praises.
Township’s first full-length LP, Coming Home, will be released on Feb 29th at TT the Bears, and despite heavy industry attention, is first being self-released due to intense audience demand (the “Townies,” as they have dubbed themselves). This is rock and roll at the core - heart, sweat, swagger, humor, libido and power, with all other musical genres being devoured and reinterpreted along the way. Live shows invoke the revival spirit, with both the band and audience reaching exhaustion only to be reborn and enlightened. A sense of unity between band and fan is formed, with songs enchanting repeat listenings and performances making lifers out of all those in attendance.
